Greenhouse Designs

Greenhouse Designs And Considerations

Greenhouse Site Selection And Planning

The most important site considerations for greenhouse designs are: sunlight contacts, water supply and soil quality:

  • Good sunlight is very much needed, especially in early season. Greenhouse site should avoid shadows cast from trees or buildings

  • Adequate water supply is essential and good water quality is important for growing healthy plants

  • Good and well drained soil is essential for greenhouse plants. Soil should be amended with compost, peat, or other organic materials to improve drainage and quality.

Greenhouse Orientation And Structure

Orientation and structural loads considerations are important for proper greenhouse designs.

  • As shadows are cast by greenhouse structure frame, orientation of the greenhouse structure is especially important for winter production.

  • As air flow is used to modulate temperature and relative humidity in the greenhouse through ventilation of walls and openings, air circulation of the site must be studied carefully. Prevailing winds are generally from the south-west in the summer and from the north in the winter.

  • Loads are stresses to the greenhouse structure from external or internal forces. Commercial greenhouses are required to meet structural standards to withstand various loads. These include wind loads, snow loads or any other environmental stress.

With good greenhouse designs and materials, it is possible to build a simple but productive greenhouse. The key to good green house designs is to have a lot of airflow to reduce disease and other problems.
