Large specimen Anthurium in a suitably-proportioned antique urn in the Conservatory of Flowers, an elegant Victorian-era greenhouse that is one of the landmarks of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.

Made of wood and glass, it was built - from a kit - in 1878, and opened to the public in 1879.

The Conservatory suffered severe damage in 1995 after a devastating windstorm swept through San Francisco. A five-year, $25 million campaign to save the Conservatory resulted in many needed upgrades to the facility and it reopened to the public in 2003.

It is designated as a city, state and national historic landmark.

A huge cone on a big, old (perhaps a century old), specimen of the Mexican cycad species, Dioon spinulosum.

This plant, along with a number of mature palms, tree ferns and philodendrons, take advantage of the height of the main dome of the elegant Conservatory of Flowers, San Francisco’s large, Victorian-era greenhouse in Golden Gate Park.

Constructed of wood and glass, this is the oldest existing conservatory of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. It was built - from a kit - in 1878, and opened to the public in 1879. It is designated as a city, state and national historic landmark.

The Conservatory suffered severe damage in 1995 after a devastating freak windstorm swept through San Francisco. A five-year, $25 million campaign to save the Conservatory resulted in many needed upgrades to the facility and it reopened to the public in 2003.
