The elegant Victorian Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.
This wood and glass greenhouse is the oldest existing conservatory of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. It was built - from a kit - in 1878, and opened to the public in 1879.
The Conservatory suffered severe damage in 1995 after a devastating windstorm swept through San Francisco. A five-year, $25 million campaign to save the Conservatory resulted in many needed upgrades to the facility and it reopened to the public in 2003.
It has a permanent plant collection, and also features an ever-changing program of special exhibitions.
It is designated as a city, state and national historic landmark.
San Francisco, California.
